What should my child wear to dance class?

Please note: dance shoes should never be worn outdoors.  Please carry your dance shoes into the studio, and change once you are inside.

All students should have their hair pulled off their faces and should have proper footwear.

Tap & Jazz Classes:Dark colored dance pants and a leotard or a tight fitting camisole or tee-shirt.  Baggy clothes and jeans should not be worn.
Hip-Hop Classes:  Wind pants or baggy jogging pants, dance sneakers, and a camisole or tee-shirt.
Ballet Classes:  Hair in a ponytail, French braid, or bun,  pink tights, pink shoes, and should have the following leotard colors:
Ballet I: Solid colored leotard (any color)
Ballet II: Solid colored pink leotard
Ballet III: Solid colored purple leotard
Ballet IV: Solid colored blue leotard
Ballet V: Solid colored black leotard
Sheer skirts or ballet shorts may be work in any level, but they must be above the knee.

Boys should wear dark stretchy pants, and a fitted white tee or tank.

Students in Pre-Classes should wear dance clothes that they best like.  Proper footwear is best.  For the Pre-Jazz portion of class, ballet slippers are adequate.

Do you offer a make-up if my child is absent from class?
If a class is cancelled due to inclement weather (check website or call studio), there will be a scheduled make-up class.  If a student misses class due to illness or any other reason, they may make up the class during any other comparable section.  For example, if a pre-level student misses a class, they may attend any other pre-level class as a make-up.  If you have questions as to which class is comparable for your child, please ask your teacher, or ask at the front desk.

My child currently takes one form of dance.  Can they try out another class to see if they would be interested?
Of course!  Children are encouraged to try many styles of dance.  Attending a trial class (observing or participating) is a great way for a child to experience other styles of dance.

Can I register for the whole year or for multiple sessions?
Yes, multi-session registration is accepted.  We offer a $25 discount to all full-year registrations, and a $10 discount for two-session registrations.  All other discounts still apply.

Can I watch my child’s class?
Although we do not encourage parents to observe every week, we are a very open studio and are happy to accommodate the needs of parents and children.  The dance floor is adjacent to the waiting area, and there isn’t a door separating the two spaces.  Parents can hear class, and are welcome to peek around the corner to watch as needed.  Parents of new students are encouraged to watch class the first day of the session, and a parent’s week is held during the Fall and Winter Sessions.

Do I have to wait at the studio while my child is in class?
No.  Parents are welcome to wait, do errands, or go for a walk.  If you have a cell phone, please leave that number as your emergency contact so that we may contact you in the unlikely event of a problem.

Do you do a Spring Show?
We perform a Spring Showcase every spring.  We do not start practicing for the spring show until the Spring Session.  We want every child to be able to experience the fun and excitement of performance without lots of additional costs to our families.  Therefore we have created a costume gallery from which we reuse costumes and costume pieces each year.  Also, we provide parents of our students free tickets to one of our performances.  We currently charge a small show fee to participate.  This fee helps to defray costs associated with adding more costumes, facility rental fees, and teacher overtime.  However, our goal is to eliminate the show fee completely.  We will begin decreasing this fee in 2007, and gradually decrease the fee each year.

We have performed our shows at Windham and Mansfield Middle Schools, and for 2007 we are hoping to perform at E.O. Smith High School.

Do you offer Financial Aid?
Miss Kelly’s Dance & Drama does not currently receive funding to offer financial aid.  However, we will not deny children the dance experience due to financial constraints.  If you would like your child to attend dance classes and you are currently struggling to make ends meet, PLEASE let us know.  We will happily arrange a payment plan, or reduce/eliminate class fees in order to be certain every child has the opportunity to dance.  Financial assistance is given on a case-by-case basis.  Miss Kelly’s Dance & Drama has future plans to develop a financial aid program that will be available to anyone in need of financial assistance.

Where can I purchase dancewear?
We do carry some dance apparel at the studio.  Additionally Miss Kelly’s Dance & Drama allows people to “recycle” old shoes and clothing.  All shoes are sold for $8 and all leotards and skirts are sold for $10.  Anything not appropriate for resale will be donated to the Salvation Army.  All money from these sales will be used to help purchase new items for our costume fund.
Children in the younger classes usually can find footwear from local retailers such as Payless Shoe Stores.  Additionally, there are two dance stores in the area; DanceWorks in Vernon, and Dance Village in Manchester. Also, if you know what sizes you need, there are some good discount sites such as www.discdance.com.

Do you offer discount for multiple class registrations?
Yes.  Families who register for multiple classes in the same session will save 10% off the second class, 15% off the third class, and 20% off the fourth or more classes.  Discounts will be applied to the least expensive classes per session.
